Thanks for the breakdown.
Just wondering about making each scale a separate lowpoly. Why are you doing it? I can see the benefit on the silhouette, but is it not taking up a lot of UV space and tri-count to have the lowpoly as you have it now? And also how do you make sure it does not have some holes where you can see through the arms? Also how do you explode it properly to get a clean bake with all that overlapping geometry?
Why are you doing it?
-well sisnce is a personal work im more worried with the overall look than the techcnical aspects, atleast in some degree.
I can see the benefit on the silhouette, but is it not taking up a lot of UV space and tri-count to have the lowpoly as you have it now?
- well yes and yes, in the case of the uvs i made a 2048x2048 just for the scales, and the tricount was now as big as i woud think at first, 75k tris sounds like a lot but the engines those days are very powerfull and theres a lot of games with higher tricount than that.
And also how do you make sure it does not have some holes where you can see through the arms?
-basically with i see a hole i move the scales a little , as i said some areas you just need patience and love.
Also how do you explode it properly to get a clean bake with all that overlapping geometry?
-again , patience and love, i basically separated the high meshes first and then i gave a material to the low scales correspondent to the high meshes.
i used susbtance designer for my bakes, here is the link where they teach how to do it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmEapnKrzd4
well thats it , hopefully i answered all of your questions
Ready Player One was an awesome book but the ending was a bit too "perfect". But I gotta say this piece is fantastic. Really love the attention to detail from the transition from 2D to 3D and you give us a breakdown to boot. Top work pal!
and @Nuclear Angel no problem man thats the point of this forum after all.
