So I missed the timeline for Allegorithmic's A Roadtrip in 2116 contest but I liked the premise so I wanted to still make project out of it.
My idea is that for some reason or another modern civilization is gone and the roads have deteriorated because of it. But the new civilization has rebuilt itself to the point where some people can travel between settlements now. This diorama is showing a traveler making camp for the night.
