Hi everyone.

I've been stuck trying to figure this out for almost an hour now. I've never had this problem before and i'm having two entirely different results from two entirely different programs.

Handplane is producing a decent looking bake but the model is incredibly dark in some spots and the texture file looks weird.

Texture file:

xNormal is producing a horrible bake but the texture looks normal.

Texture file:

The UVs are pretty awful, I just wanted to test the bake.

Could it be something to do with Maya? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Your first normal map is an object space normal map.  Make sure you have your baker set to Tangent Space.
As for the second one looking bad in Maya, make sure your model is appropriately Left- or Right-handed (flips how the green channel of your normal map is interpreted) and that the bump2d node of your normal map channel is set to Tangent Space Normals.
