Illustration and Character art - first steps towards a portfolio

Hi there fellow artists,

After a long time I have decided to showcase my art for the first time. My question would be that how many pieces should there be in a beginner's portfolio? At the moment I have 2 that I feel might be good enough. 

These are some of the pages of a children's cookbook idea.


I can't really decide which background fits the best.


Also any advice or feedback is welcome.

I think Feng Zhu Design Cinema covers online portfolio tips, it's focused on concept art, but the topics can be very analogous to a cg portfolio.

Edit: On your last post, I think a flat background reads better, the heavy blur is a bit noisy, and distracting, for me anyway.

Finally finished the monster rider.

Also retouched an old practice piece.
