I've hit a serious snag many times over the years - trying to replicate the look of damascened steel on any number of projects. I've tried photosourcing, hand painting, and any number of other tricks, but it never looks quite RIGHT. It often ends up making the item in question look like wood, for example.
Assuming a standard "Metallic / Roughness" setup, is there any advice or siggestions for making, say, a sword look like pattern welded or damascened steel?

I seem to remember more in-depth conversations about damascus steel on the forums, but couldn't find them for now.

Anyways, Smart Materials are a different thing. Made in Painter for Painter. You want to publish sbsar files out from Designer and add them to the shelf in Painter. Allegorithmic have documentation and youtube tutorials showing how to do this.
