photoshop- color picking only one layer even if theres several layers showing?

I have my main layer im painting on and I have another layer ontop that has my uwrap. I am trying to color pick only from the layer that is selected but when i color pick it takes the value from both layers. I tried locking the unwrap layer but that didnt work. any ideas? thanks in advance.
