So I've been getting my hands dirty with Unreal 4 in my spare time. ...It's so out my comfort zone now after years of doing stylised, low poly and hand painted art for my professional work but I didn't want to fall behind; It's far from perfect but I've learnt a lot so far and that's what is important Logged about 20 hours on substance painter just on this little project!
I would love some critiques, my eyes are so used to the scene after this long. Any help given would be great; I've been working on Sky Saga (Very stylized, procedurally generated voxel game) for 2 years, so this certainly feels different! The lighting is my main struggle. After some critiques from the lovely Chris Holden my scene is currently at this stage:
Good progress since the last version! I think you could improve the result with a few changes, mainly reinforcing the focus point. I did a quick paintover to show what I mean:
In short:
- Deleted some books. I tend to think it's always best to use props sparingly as they'll have more impact that way. In your current version I think there's just too many books and they become noise. - Deleted the circle lights on top. It might be just me but I think they attracted a bit too much attention to an area which isn't important. - Less highlight on ground outside of the central focus. I especially painted out the bottom highlight on the ground. I slightly boosted the light on the chairs. - Yellow tiles around the central chairs and walls. Again it's mostly attracting the eye there, using a language you already have in the scene. - Some junk/cable/whatever in the boxes. You could keep those new meshes super simple, but I think it would bring some more interest to the scene. The clean closed books are a weird mix with the boxes right now. - Electricity cables joining the lights to the wall. Always easy, always efficient.
Hopefully this helps. Keep it up, it's definitely going in the right direction.
Oh man MADWISH!!! That is exactly what I needed, a fresh set of eyes and what you've done in the paintover looks amazing, really boosts the scene and makes everything work a lot better together. I will get to work ASAP on all this and post some updates. Thank you so much!
