Hi guys, this is my first post here and i study 3D one year already, and lately i'm trying to make some hand painted textures but i'm failing hard in this, my textures dont look like they have textures at all, they just look like colors with darker and light tones, can you guys take me some suggestions in how i can do something more attractive? like, where to start, what brushes to use... theres the object that i`m trying to texture, i think the wood looks fine, but the iron is terrible. Thanks!

What's helped early on with handpainting was to not think of the process as texturing, but to truly see the model as a painting unto itself. There's factors like imagine there a point light above the object among other tips people will bring up, which all just grin it down to seeing the model as a static painting.
Treat it like a painting. Think about where you want to put your value (high and low), your color palatte and composition. These will drive the quality of your handpainted art.
