Decided to start this project off with tileable materials. First one being some medieval bricks I made in Substance Designer.

Bricks look really awesome but they don't look anything like the concept. The concept has really irregular and random brick shapes.

Woah. I like your idea of having side notes in the concept of what props you will make and the materials that will be needed. Looking forward to see the concept converted into 3D. May I ask, is this a realtime 3D project? For example, could I walk around this environment in something like UE4?

There are some regular bricks in the second image. I screen capped it for ya :P

I will be creating this in UE4 but it'll most likely be a fly through level. There isn't much space to walk and being able to fly where you want will allow you to get close to areas without much collision getting in the way.

Oh, yeah I didn't mean walk specifically. Flying counts. Was hoping you could walk/fly through the level rather than it just being rendered pictures. Cool.

I usually just take mental notes when looking for areas that can be modular. This scene isn't too complex in design so I didn't feel like I had to write em down. I usually find out what works during the blocking stages so I do try and find as many opportunities to use modularity. It saves a ton of time.

I've been busy with work so I haven't had time to get a lot done but I've not abandoned this project. Been working on detailing my blockout and getting things ready for sculpt. I'll have an update this week guys.

Looking really sweet. Blockout looks almost identical to the concept. I'm fairly new so no experienced critique from me but it's inspiring and it kind of teaches me too.

Going to follow this up by modelling more of the smaller props before vertex painting and placing decals to breakup the scene.

Hey everyone. I do apologize for the absence. I had to put this scene on pause for awhile to really learn how to bring this to the next level. I'm still working on it but i wanted to update you all. I am also working on another scene simultaneously so it's taken me awhile to come back to this.

Dayum Moses, you're really killing this one haha...

Only critiques I can throw in there right now is probably more on the presentation side from your last screenshot... seems a little overly sharpened and comes across a little noisy on a lot of your dense textures e.g. ropes, wood, etc... and that the cloth on the bed seems a little low-poly with all the sharp triangular segments in there but that's really just knit picking... your substances are picking up really well, really feeling that glisten off the floor from this angle (Y)

@CodeferBlue I'm still updating the old models but i will post prop images soon.
@KidintheDark Yeah things are still in progress and I did sharpen the fuck out of the image in Photoshop haha. UE4 ran REALLY slow for me when I increased the temporal AA over 100. Not sure how to get the high-res screenshot to render the temporal AA settings while not in gameplay.

Looks awesome so far. I dunno shit about enviro modeling yet, but compared to the original concept art, your execution looks very clean. The concept art is way more contrasty and eye-searing. Seems like you'd need stronger AO, and stronger lights and shadows, if you wanted yours to match it more closely (if!). Right now yours is more like Valve's take on the art: very matte and smooth, and more realistic. Very cool, though.

Love the style you're going for here, fantastic scene as well! One thing I think would look good is giving the cloth a tanner, more earthy color to it. At the moment the white contrasts too much with the darker tones of the background. Looking back at the concept though, maybe you could get a similar effect by adding some dirt or grunge to those fabrics. Not sure how much you'd want to deviate though. Looks great either way!

Hey my dudes. Another update, One thing I'm having serious trouble with are alphas. I cannot seem to get the engine to correctly mask out alpha patterns like spider webs, torn cloth, etc. Any tips or resources I could use would be super helpful. I'm getting really poor masking issues and I'm not sure how execute assets that need alpha cut-outs. I attached a bunch of screens and threw in a few of my other scene if anyone was interested. I'd say i'm almost finished with this but please send me any comments or feedback you have that'll help me improve.

I'm going to try again with a higher quality image and turn mipmapping off because it was on

. Probably was a bad mix of the two.

I'm not necessarily saying turning mipmapping off will be a smart choice-- it might get noisy when you view it from far away. But it's worth trying. Scene looks really lovely so far. Has a really special feel to it.

Excellent scene, I'm inspired by your sculpting work to start learning a lot more ZBrush.

As for the Masks on your webs, are you using a single color/alpha channel? Or a a white mask using RGB? If you aren't using an all white mask I would suggest doing so!

I usually put a mask in my alpha channel for masks, but as far as the sculpting goes. I usually just beat down the edges with trim dynamic and use alphas to get the details I need then bake. Nothing too crazy.

Did you ever get your alpha issues "sorted" out? (See what I did there). If not try this:
make your spider web maps a png texture. We currently do it in Unity.
if using tga maps be sure to put the alpha in the rgb channels and save as a 32 bit. 24 bit will remove the alpha.
If all else fails, using 8 bit alphas can help resolve issues because its either black or white, no greyscale. But alphas can look more old school as 8 bit.
