Should i buy GTX 970 or R9 390

Hi,

  Help me out here please, I have the opportunity to buy a used GTX 970 or R9 390 at similar prices. If you guys can share your experience or recommend any of this two cards I will be grateful. I will be using - Maya, Substance Painter, Photoshop, Mari, etc. I have to make the decision by today

I'd lean towards the R9, it has double the vram of the 970 plus there have been issues with the 970 and substance painter.  I did a little googlin' and it turns out the 970 has 3.5gb of full speed ram while the last 500mb runs at a snails pace.  Here's an annoying youtube personality explaining it.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPlCIUh_Tp0

Thank you Justin, so 970 is a 3.5GB only. And maybe when Substance Painter tries to access the slower .5GB, major slowdown happens ! R9 390 would be my first choice, but previously I used an AMD 7970 and I was having some issue in Maya with the Crimson Drivers. But the 8GB vram would be nice, will wait for some more posts here before buying

If you're not in a rush, the Geforce 1060 is supposedly releasing on July 7 , and is supposed to be about as fast as a Geforce 980 with 6gb of vram, costing $200~$250.

Yes i know but the price for new cards in India is just crazy. GTX 1070 is selling for 40000 rupees that is 595 dollars, expecting the GTX 1060 to be at least 30000 rupees that is 446.5 dollars. And GTX 1080 is selling for 60000 rupees that is 893 dollars. 

This two cards costs 17000 rupees or 253 dollars for GTX 970 and 18500 rupees or 275 dollars for R9 390.

Well in that case; The Radeon card should be the better one overall for art production due to it being somewhat faster and having over twice the vram, but it'll generally be worse for games (if that matters to you) due to how most games are better optimized for Geforce cards.

Games are not in priority, don't play games that much. Would like to buy the best card between the two, that can better run all the software's. By the way RX 480 is priced at 27000 rupees, that is 400 dollars.

Nvidia 1000s series already came out, you might as well pick one of them now.

Actually the 1000 series is priced is very high in India, it's in a previous post of mine
