Hi.

Umm... so I want to select faces based on the direction they are facing. You know like selecting all the faces along the Z axis etc etc etc.

I've read this site and it says:
Side of Active
Selects all data on the mesh in a single axis
Is this what I want? If not please tell how.

Thank you! :3

For Blender, select a vert with a normal facing the direction you want, then go to select > select similar > normal. Change the threshold in the tool options. Keep in mind that because this works by vert normal you'll want to have smoothed normals instead of faceted ones (select all the components and go to the 'T'ools menu > Shading/UVs > Smooth).

The 'side of active' feature selects the components to one 'side' of the selection, and has nothing to do with face direction.

    Thank you for replying.

Okay I did it.  Its not easy to do. I might as well do it manually. I guess I could select it manually, but I have so many layers - I thought it would be easier to select all at once by axis.  :(
