Zbrush - sculpting doesn't work after re-editing?

Greetings friends, excuse the noobie question - I've scoured google for a good minute on this.

So through some issue or accidental key press, I hit something that pulled my object back into 2D mode- and after I clear canvas with CTRL+N, and redraw the object, then "T" to edit, none of the brushes seem to affect the mesh whatsoever. I can have full camera controls to rotate/zoom/move, but no transform functions seem to work.

It's definitely now a "tool" object, that I can redraw, but going back into edit mode doesn't allow me to manipulate the mesh.

Any help is great! thanks!

*edit* I guess I got it to work by adding it as another subtool layer.. but the top icon is greyed out, and the second in the hierarchy is now editable. I'm confused. That's learning Zbrush I suppose. If anyone cares to explain this process I'd appreciate it!
