How to unify normal projection across multiple objects? (3dsmax)

I'm trying to make some trees in UE, and found this as method which looks great.



I've been trying to achieve this in 3DS Max by creating my basic sphere and then sticking on the planes. But every time I use edit normal's and try to unify them, the planes do not take into account the sphere and will not follow its proejction.

This is the angle I want the normals to follow.


As you can see the spheres unified normals are correct, but the planes are not going the way I want them to. I've tried to do it manually and while it works to an extent it's incredibly tedious. I've also read up on the polycount information section about this, but I cannot get it to work, nor can I get any of the recommended scripts to work.

Any idea how I can get them all to following the spheres projection? Thanks.
