Newbie needs help with 3DS Max!

Hey guys!
I'm new here and new to the world of 3D modeling. I'm working on my first "serious" project and, naturally, I ran into some problems, which I can't seem to find solutions for. I hope someone can help.

So here they are:
1.  The most annoying one. Whenever I try to do anything (Select any element of the object, navigate or even click anywhere) my viewport (orthographic) jumps randomly and I have to center it on my object. I tried turning off "Selection Sensitivity" in the Viewport Configuration as suggested on a couple of other forums, but that didn't change anything.

2. Connecting edges causes this weird thing to happen.
Doesn't matter if I use Cut tool or Connect.

Alternatively, maybe you can suggest a way to connect two objects in the picture.
Again, I'm sorry for these silly questions, I'm just starting out.
I would appreciate any help!

It jumps?  odd, I think these 3d programs are designed to pivot around a selected object or by the world space by default ... or most recent position ... so i think you need to select something and click on the option for recentering your viewport nav thing ... sorry this isnt very concise, its actually been a while since ive dabbled with 3d so ... #'_'#

um ... for connecting edges the edges curve like that cause they're not actually edges ... sort of ... they're nurbs ... (i know that's confusing, what the hell are nurbs i thought their were just polygons and edges, right?)  might be a result of the turbosmooth
I can't really see what your working but I think that you might be working too complex, at the rate your going you might end up having issues with your geometry/topology  you may need to check for you topology count, check for ngons and stuff and check the edge flow

now if you want to connect these babies firt you need to merge them, use the attach function (oh i can see the button in the image that you posted) cause if they're separate objects i dont think you can do it ... hmmm well judging by the colors of your vertices they're probably already same object.  also i think you need the same number of edges and verticies that your connecting.
There should be a "Bridge" button somewhere, select the edges and click on bridge.
their is also the option of where you can mannually move the verticies over to the other object, using snaptoggle to align the verticies to each other and then select both overlappinv verticies left click select wield verticies (this is a bit more work but the option is there)

its kinda been a while so, sorry if my input isnt good :S
