No matter what I do, I can't get the metal finish look quite right. The metal in this gun is supposed to be a kind parkerized metal. It's so difficult to make this look right. I can't quite explain why I feel this doesn't look good to me, and I have no access to any real world parkerized metal for reference.
I guess my question is, should such coated metal be still be considered as metal? It produces quite soft highlights as the surface is not so smooth due to the processing.
I am thinking to use Substance designer to do this as I am not really getting good results with 3D coat and for some reason it breaks the perfect baked normal maps I created with xNormal. Even though they work in the beginning after adding some layers with normal detail, eventually the normal map starts to produce artefacts on the edges.
Because I baked this with the UV seams on the hard edges method, the UV map is not quite human readable, so I thought I could paint the scratches in 3D Coat and then export the scratches to SD because they need to be placed by hand anyway.
