I'm not sure how I've missed your thread >.> Dude that Varian bust is badass, love it! I would love to see the whole character from that Tyrande is also super cool, I do agree with @tomenjerry and @Tits about the nose crits but still super cool stuff!
Dude these look awesome so far, great work and this is a great idea from you it makes sense, I will probably try to do something similar. really cool man looking forward to more updates
Killer work man, the Loish one if my favourite for sure. I think the only thing I'd keep an eye on would be the hair getting a little overly busy like on the Varian Wrynn sculpt. That being said I think the fur is phenomenal! Can't wait to see your next work man.
Yeah It's been a while. I'm doing some exercises for a course that I'm taking and also spending some precious time playing Overwatch, hehe. Inspired by that awesome and super addictive game, this time I wanted to do the character I like playing the most: Mercy!
Man all this looks great. Wish I'd come by sooner . On the last one I do have one suggestion which would be to paint in more reds to fake subsurface. Especially on the tip of the ears. Even if the design doesn't have that I feel it adds a nice aesthetic. Of course that's very subjective
Very well done work, Mateus! You can absolutely see the skill progression and confidence gain across the busts you've done so far. What's next on the chopping block?
The next bust is going to take a good while I think. I've been studying more 2D lately and also have started what would be the next bust, but I felt like blocking the whole body for practice, and maybe it will become a full character, dunno yet.
All of these are really inspirational, @Mateus! Faeb and the Bunny Girl are incredible and I'm looking forward to whatever the last bust on the list might be. Good luck on the final piece and it's great that you're nearing the finish line for such an ambitious personal challenge.
Hi @dllxtt, Thank you! I'll keep them highpoly, no plans to turn all into handpainted, I love doing these. But I'll be working on full characters, including handpainted, and hopefully, I can get some feedback here at polycount when the time comes. At the moment I have a pbr one in the making (Arthas).
So I've updated the texture of the handpainted Demon Hunter bust.Tried to define better the shapes and give it some color variation. Looking better?
Definitely looking better! Here's some more ideas:
- For the skin, try making the border between the light and the shadow more saturated and pushed towards red. This will give the skin a subsurface scattering effect. - Those big ears are likely to get light passing through them. So, you could brighten up the shadows with a saturated reddish color, again to fake subsurface scattering. The tip of the ear is the thinnest part, so you could push the reds even more. - I would keep the reddening on the nose, that was actually a nice touch on the old version. - If you want the glows to look glowy, they need to be brighter in value than the surrounding skin. Try grayscaling your image and notice how some of your glowy lights don't actually light up much. You'll want to make the tattoos super-crazy bright green if they are to stand out against the value of the skin. - I would brighten the up-facing planes on the lower lip and add a specular highlight. - The brassiere got too blackish on the down-facing planes. A good rule of thumb for the form shadows is to shift the local color halfway to black. Also realize that the underside of her brassiere is going to be lit by bounce light coming from the ground. Because of that, it's a good idea to decide on the general color for the ground. You could have a brown ground for instance, so you could subtly shift the shadow color to brown. - I would make the up-facing planes on the horns brighter to give them a better read. - I would also push the hair highlights around the crown of the head. - Gemstones tend to get an interesting internal reflection, which will make the bottom part appear to have a bright glow to it, while the top-facing planes are, unintuitively, dark. And then on top of that dark area, you will still see a glassy specular reflection. The specular reflection should be painted in with white, because only conductive materials will have colored specular highlights.
I did a paint-over to help illustrate these pointers. I hope it's helpful!
@Wendy de Boer, Oh my God! Thank you so much for this feedback, It's very helpful! I love how it turned in the paint-over. Will definitely take these pieces of knowledge and try to apply them to her and future works. Thanks again!
@Wendy de Boer, I've followed what you suggested on your feedback. I didn't make the brassiere as bright as yours but tried to make it less dark and add a bit of brown on the bottom side as you said. Thanks a lot!
Finished another bust. This one completes my objective of making 9 busts for this thread, which was a way to keep up with 3D when I had almost no time to work on art. I have at least 2 more on my list that I'd like to make, so it probably won't stop now.
@Wendy de Boer hehe yes, I found this style to be pretty cool and fun. AJ Nazzaro has been doing a few of these big lip orcs lately. And thanks a lot for following this thread since the beginning, much appreciated
@LeahM Thanks! making busts is great because you can see results faster. I used it as a way to keep up with art when I had very little free time. Now I'm focusing more on finishing full characters.
@CybranM Thanks! AJ Nazzaro has a really cool style.
@karytsukino Oh yeah I loved the expression too when I first saw the concept. Thanks

@tomenjerry , thanks! Yeah I agree. The Yao Deng's illustration has a small nose, but I think I did it even smaller. Thanks for the call.
@Tits , I'm glad you liked it!
@Magihat , thanks! The Darth Maul Girls is my least favorite hehe, but it's interesting to know that someone likes it best.
@FemCharles , thanks!
@Intervain , thank you! Your work is always an inspiration!
@PixelMasher , really cool to hear from someone who works on one of my favorite games (WoW)! Thanks!
@Ouran , thank you! : )

As for the style, I'm basing on this great illustration: http://i.imgur.com/DK5dQvc.jpg from: http://raichiyo33.deviantart.com/
So here are the final images of the Mercy bust
@RocketBrian thanks!
So here is the new bust I'm working on. This is Faeb, a character created by the wow player and 2D artist Faebelina.
Thanks!

Here is a new bust for my collection
