Transferring smart materials over to a new mesh creates errors?

Hello everyone,

I have been painting a character of mine and after creating a base layer i wanted to make some changes to the base mesh before i continued. I made my changes in 3dsmax, then imported it in SP1. Before i did this i created smart materials of every material i had created so i could transfer the painting i had done earlier onto my new mesh.

However when i do this it changes a little even though the mesh itself and the UVS haven't changed at all. Behold:

Masks seem to be doing something weird aswel?


How is this possible? It does this for almost every mesh aswel, not just this belt. Is there a better way to make changes to your base mesh without losing the painting you've done?
