SENIOR ENVIRONMENT ARTIST
Hardsuit Labs is looking for a Lead Environment Artist to join our team. This artist will help establish a high level of quality and consistency of environment art. They will help maintain a high visual standard and help guide a small but growing team of enthusiastic and motivated artists. You will set an example to the team by the creation of art assets, and a mastery of proprietary technology and the tools pipeline. This person has an understanding of memory and frame budgets, production scheduling and project goals.
YOU
You are a tested game dev warrior who has done it all and you’ve earned your AAA stripes. You use your keen ninja senses to anticipate development issues and always be at the ready with a variety of possible solutions. Like a true sensei, you know how to nurture and inspire your team. Leading by example, setting high visual standards, and teaching are some of your strengths. Once you explained to your grandma how Substance Designer works, she thought it was a lovely way to automate the texturing process. You really strive in a team oriented environment and feel comfortable working with minimal input.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience leading a small team of developers
- AAA game development experience for both PC and consoles
- Experience with Unreal Engine 4, PBR material generation, The Quixel Suite, and Substance Designer (or equivalent node-based material pipeline)
- Able to anticipate development issues and always be ready with a variety of possible solutions
- Must demonstrate an excellent knowledge of relevant 2D and 3D software (Maya, ZBrush, and Photoshop preferred)
- A keen eye for spatial composition, lighting, and building believable spaces
- Experience creating environments using modular systems
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- High degree of self-motivation and initiative
- An understanding of effective asset creation and optimization
- Organic terrain and hard surface modeling experience
- Candidates should be able to work with minimal input and be comfortable working in a team environment
- 5+ years of work experience in game development on shipping titles
DAY-TO-DAY
- Manage and mentor a small team of artists
- Coordinate outsourcing, including the creation of asset packages needed to be sent out, communicating feedback and creating notes for revisions, approving and polishing content that are at an acceptable quality level, and implementing the outsourced material
- Collaborate with art director, designers, programmers and animators on object specifications and deliveries
- Helps provide direction to environment artists for aesthetic and technical considerations
- Participates in departmental meetings
- Participates in the planning for project environments
- Take ownership of the construction of environment zones, and prop/asset lists
- Produce prop and environment assets at a senior level
- Is a key contributor to the development of the artistic techniques and processes utilized to define and achieve a product’s visual style or encourage artistic evolution within the studio. This entails expanding methods to improve the production pipeline, tools, systems, and visual quality
- Supervise bug distribution and verify bug fixes
