Is World Machine still an industry standard tool for terrain creation?

I'm thinking of buying the standard version to use as part of my workflow for shaping terrain for my future environment projects.  I have little knowledge of terrain creation tools and I've looked around and there are other terrain creation tools such as Terragen and World Creator.  However, I can't find a recent answer as to whether World Machine is still an industry standard tool (and does that even matter?).  I've dipped into the free trail for World Machine and I liked it, should I go ahead and purchase the standard version?  Or are there other, better tools to consider?

World Machine is still widely used in studios worldwide, and there are plenty of tutorials on how to use it online. Thing is, most studios only care about the end result, and not the software you are using. That is, if you can create amazing landscapes using either World Machine, Terragen, World Creator, or even sculpt them manually, that's what matters in the end.
I'd say just download the trial versions of each program, and see which one you like more. It is always the best method when you are just starting out.

Thanks a lot for the reply!  I'm really enjoying making terrains with World Machine so I think I'm probably going to stick with it.  Although, like you said, experimenting with the trial version of each program might not be a bad idea before making a purchase.
