Hey guys,

I haven't had much experience with hand-painted texturing of characters before. Please tell me what you guys think and critique as much as you can. I really would like to improve as much as possible.

First attempt:

Update 1 - Added eyebrows and changed some shading:

Update 2:

Update 3:

Thanks in advance,
GammaRay

Off to a great start for sure. The philtrim looks off to me. It looks to much like a cleave and not enough like a bowl indent. The eyes nee some work as well. As it stands there are no lids, and comes of flat. Also you are missing some anatomy on the eyes. Final observation is the lower lip. It looks to thin, try making it fatter and I think it would look better.

Thank you a ton for the feedback! I've made those changes. I would still love heaps of feedback. The more feedback, the more I learn.

Looking better, if you are still up for some suggestions:
A: The lacrimal caruncle doesn't quite look right. Too sharp.
B: Philtrum looking much better, still to deep and dark for my liking. Maybe lighten it up?
C: Lips looking better, get a rounder curve and bring the color closer to the skin color. Looks a little like the guy has lipstick. Also I like not extending the color of my bottom lip all the way to the edge of the top lip. I like it to fall a little short.
D: To big of a cleave in the forehead area, suggest lightening it a bit.
E: Nose has a dark of an outline, doesn't look quite right to me.

Random thoughts on texturing humans, picked this up from the legend James Gurney. Add a little red to cheeks and nose (blood is close to the surface there). Add a little brown or even blue to the chin area (facial hair) and add a slight slight slight amount of green to the forehead (Strange, right?). Less blood there or something.

Here is my quite touch over. I made all the changes I suggested to a very poor degree to illustrate what I was talking about. Believe it or not I even added green to the forehead.

Now the last thing I suggest you do is take everything I just said with a grain of salt, because I think yours is looking pretty good.

your texturing seems a bit flat, id focus on making it a bit more contrasty, add some more color variations to the skin, and add some scars, moles, or something of the user to look at, he looks like and older man with baby skin

    hope this helps

Thanks everyone for the awesome feedback.

Here is the current state of the model with proposed changes. More work to be done:

I still need to put the eyebrows back and add some extra details as people have recommended. Otherwise, I would still love some more feedback on details/lighting.

You are still really flat and lack contrast in your texture, check out this example I found online, push the colors, and contrast, once you got that, add details, freckles, scars etc.

A good approach is to view your texture in grey scale, make an saturation adjustment layer that you can turn on and off.

I took a screenshot of your texture, and just pumped up the saturation, that alone makes him look more alive.  Below that I showed what your textures look like desaturated

Thank you guys for the feedback. I've been away so haven't had the time to work on it. Back now and have done some general topology fixes, cleaned up the texture a bit and added those discreet colour changes. Here is where it is at now. I will do a general colour change at the end to make it more skin toned and appealing. Otherwise lighting and shading is something I really want to get right.

How can I add details to the face including lighting (and shadows)?
What other topology should be fixed?

I'd like to have the "chiselled" look on the cheeks like the Undead do in the new WoW models. How should I go about doing that?

    Thanks!

To be nitpicky if we're this close to the face, don't forget the lacrimal caruncle. Should just be a quick triangle prism addition to the inside the eyes.

This is solid though!  See what you can do with adding an interesting hair cut to it!
