UE4 - College Assignment Throne Room

Hey, 

For a recent college assignment, my class has had to work together in groups of 3-4 people on a Throne Room, based off the competition that was run on here. Part of the Unit Criteria requires us to gather feedback from the Polycount forums. I have attached a link to the Pinterest board I have set up with my groups work in. Our idea was to create a Throne Room that was based around Hell; if you could leave some feedback, that would be amazing!

First of all I think that the drawings made by the team are very good and they look quite professional and could pass as work used in making an industry standard game, the mind maps are extensive and cover a lot of areas such as the settings and the inner parts of the work such as the materials they will use and what will be in the room.
One thing that I think they could have improved was the fact they didn't take many screenshots of the project while they were making it in Mudbox or 3DS Max before adding all the effects and such.

The concepts of the hell environment are very unique in providing a 'gruesome', 'evil' tone. The human body elements that are present in both concepts and the final result appear accurate and suited to the rest of the environment, and its theme. The lighting is very effective and so is the colour scheme, and the translation form concept to design can clearly be seen. I also really like the inclusion of symbolism within the environment, and other elements that have been rarely explored e.g. player dies in contact with floor, lights in the room activate when player ascends into level. Overall a really unique environment that has used its selected theme well to provide elements that are used in so many ways.

I feel that the evidence colated for the beginning of the project is extremely good, as there is a wide variety of different ideas and inspiration points. I also feel that Josh's group have produced an extremely professional throne room, with very good sketches for different aspects of the room.

Elements including flags, fine details (cups, benches) are presented really well, and have been considered for many outcomes that involve perspective and lighting. The brick walls appear very realistic, as well as the fire giving off lighting effects to the rest of the room. I also really like the addition of the weapons surrounding the throne, because although the chair itself could be considered fairly basic, this addition makes up for it. Overall a room that provides many opportunities on how it could be perceived, and an effective theme that uses the concepts well.

Very well thought out throne room. I thought that the hell inspiration works well within the competition parameters. i can see you have put a lot of effort into all stages of the project as shown in your evidence; you have researched, concepted, as well as the worked hard in the actual overall design. The work showcases a high standard for the project and is akin to a professional standard of work.

Having seen the Throne room in full size, I can say it looks great. The Pinterest link however does not do it justice as the images are shrunk and low quality.  A great submission!

It can be seen that you have many starting ideas and have successfully came to a conclusion. The final idea as a whole is intriguing and it was nice to see the final outcome upon completion. I really like the appearance of the throne room as a whole, especially how it appears to be a torso of sorts with  the ribs/skull. If any improvements could be made I'd say add more attention to the lava texture, possibly adding more in terms of the lumpy-ness so it does not appear as flat. However, overall it all looks very effective, well done!

SHOTGUNREIGNED A great submission. I really like the vibe of the environment. It reminds me of a Skyrim dungeon. A couple of crits, the fabric used on the banners. Maybe, a little more time could have been spent on them to make them fit into the scene better. At the moment they stand out.
Also, I would have cleaned up the texture on the edge of the step t make it cleaner. You could of maybe put in a runner to cover them up?
Overall, Well done, another great Throne room submission!

The following images includes our preparation and design work I will also add links to our Pinterest boards where we got an array of images to inspire us for when we had to design and create our throne room. If you have time it would be much appreciated if you would leave comments and feedback on any aspect of our work . Ours drifted a bit away from the original design of a bit darker with different materials and changed from marbles and bricks to a more elegant look with chrome and gold to make the owner of this throne room indicating the owner is very rich and has high standards. To anybody who comments and gives feedback it is much appreciated.

Your group has produced a decent amount of sketch and research work, although I feel your mind maps are slightly relaxed. Your sketches are detailed, and this is reflected in the actual Throne Rom. Upon seeing the Throne Room in person, I can say that this is a great submission. The photos do the textures justice, but not the size; the room is a lot larger than it appears. However, the textures are amazing and the way the fire reflects is very hypnotizing. Great submission.

JOSH98012 I am still thinking the images don't do it justice. They are still very low quality. They remind me of Doom on Windows 95. I would re-take high-res screenshots in UE4.

I think the final result of your throne is very good and looks very professional considering its your first attempt, the main aspects i really like are the hands behind the throne and the way you have textured the walls as the lights from the fire are bouncing of all the walls and reflect from one side to the other. Overall i think this a very good attempt and think your design is very unique.

JAMBINO A great submission!!! Very nice work guys. However, I feel the Throne room is a little open and could have been filled a little more. The reflections on the walls are not great but I know that is down to the quality of computers you are using. Excellent submission!

For our throne room, we went with a lost/magical style theme with Aztek influences. We initially planned to have waterfalls however, after discussion, we decided to go with fountains and to have water coming through cracks in the ceiling. The Pinterest boards provided were where we started before we had the beginning throne room concept. It would be appreciated if feedback could be given. Thank you!

Outstanding Throne Room. There is a great deal of sketches and research, all of the assets that were designed were taken into consideration and implemented into the room. After watching you struggle with the lighting, to see this final outcome is outstanding. The use of textures, particularly around the Throne, is amazing. I have no faults with this Throne Room, absolutely outstanding!

The process shown by the group is good as you can see the work done before directly translated into the main Unreal Engine work, Sometimes the work doesn't really represent the work made in the engine as it goes through some changes that aren't documented, I also think that the throne room being shiny and quite fancy looking makes it look like a throne room as the person who owns the throne room will be powerful and the room translates that very well. To improve the work I would say that they would need to take some more screenshots of the progress in the Engine so that we could see it in the early stages.

I feel that this group have comunicated their designs effectively between each other, and making amendments to the designs where constraints or limitations had occured. I feel that this room has stayed true to the concepts that were created, and looks very nice and well lit. I feel that the water texture on the floor could look a litter better and reflect the light a bit more. Other than this its is a really well presented throne room, with very good assets and lighting

I really like this final outcome because from looking at your original concepts and Pinterest boards you have produced something very similar to your original idea, i also found the idea very creative and you have thought about it well and thorough  and you have the designs to back this up. Brilliant throne.

The clean cut look is really effective in this room, making it look modern despite the historic looking statues. The fire brings it all together, making a nice looking atmosphere. The only improvement I would suggest is to maybe add something in the centre of the room as it seems a little bare. However, overall it till looks great.

Alpacasaurus Again, a great submission. You didn't have long to complete and I know the quality of the computers you used help the visual quality back some. I enjoy the stairs leading up to the throne. I do think the throne is a little small and it is easy to miss. The water effects are great. Did you think about having a waterfall behind the throne which would naturally lead the eye towards the throne?

You have maintained the high standards that you set yourselves in the earlier design stages, the visual representations have clearly helped in envisioning the final outcome. The assets such as the rocks, help to flesh out and create the belief that this could be a real location. As well as the models, the lighting and effects further add to the attention to detail. If i were to pick faults, some of the textures on the roof are blurry but overall the room is very well done.

Hey guys, the stuff looks good, but be aware that having so many images in the thread, and then quoting other posts without removing the irrelevant images, makes the thread very very very heavy to load, and makes most people give up and go on to the next thread.

Edit: Also, the images are very high resolution. Most of the time, unneededly so.
