Maya Mental Ray Material trouble

Hi, I just modeled and textured a sword and i'm having a difficult time trying to make the materials and render look convincing.

I've assembled a set and lighting using Maya 2016 and Mental Ray.
My sword consists of Metal, Brass, and Leather materials that I can't make to look the way they should. I'ved tried playing with the gloss, reflectivity, and bump maps but i've only achieved to make them look flat, artificial, and non-metallic and my leather looks too grainy.

I've attached a render of what i'm struggling with and a reference photo of what kind of effect I want. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
