I don't know how to answer your question, but I can point to an answer.
Recently, a found a lot of articles regarding Epic Games Paragon and verticality. How verticality can change mobas and the way of play. maybe you can find something useful researching Paragon.
I'm sorry, I should have been more specific: I am trying to sketch out layouts for multiplayer levels (DM, CTF, etc), but the blockouts end up being very 2 dimensional (flat) I'll check that out, thanks.
Block out in geometry, then iterate until you're happy with your starting point. If you need to draw a detailed blueprint before even touching the level editor then you're procrastinating.
As @Steppenwolf advised, block out in 3d from your top view based on your sketch........and then let the magic of 3d take you to the left/front view......
