Hey guys,

I've started work on an idea for a mil spec MP9. I'm going to try to keep this pretty simple.

Aliens (movie) has incredible set design which I think is the ultimate in sci-fi interior. The shapes and patterns make what would be a simple environment seeminly complex. Here are a few reference images:

The unusual geometric shapes and the way things just fit together like a puzzle. I've done a few preliminary sketches to get the 'flow' of the design. Here's the one I liked the most.

Hopefully I'll get more time to work on this before work tomorrow!

First I opened the object file in 3DCoat, position it nicely, apply the default texture and export the projection into a Photoshop file. The reason I apply the default texture is to help me work out the contours of the object and also gives me a bit of insight to the parts of the weapon.

Below you can see the development of the basic shapes. I kept playing around with this till I was happy with how it looked.

Finally happy, I’ve started applying basic colours. I’ve gone for a fairly muted colour scheme so as to follow the brief to be mil-spec. I’ll be working on adding the details later today. Fingers crossed I’ll have something to show.

I’ve changed the balance of the dark and light colours. I think this is a bit more in line with a cleaner, 70s/80s sci-fi vibe as oppose to a post-apocalyptic feel.

I’ve started on some detail elements. I’m pretty happy with how these are looking. I’ve deliberately placed the energy bar to sit behind the StatTrack if that were used to keep things clean.

Here’s the semi-finished side-view. Next up will be refining the design to fix up any anomalies caused by the projection onto the model.

Here’s my starting point to find all the things that are wrong with it from the projection process.

So there’s a few major things as well as a lot of minor things (ugh). Here’s the major things I needed to fix up (clockwise from left to right):
    - Energy bar on other side needs to be removed.
    - Fix up overlapping texture on ridges
    - Adjust nozzle texture to sit at edge of notch
    - Create screw texture
    - Fix magazine texture (currently has handle projected on it)
    - Fix up coloured bar texture on shoulder rest ‘L’ shaped thingy

To make these edits I’ve exported the texture and place the UV sheet over the top so I can visualise each element I need to tweak.

Here’s my updated texture. Doesn’t look like much has changed, but a fair amount of work went into jumping between this and the applied texture on the model in 3DCoat to ensure I didn’t miss anything.

Once I was happy with everything, I added a few finesse touches to the texture. Just some subtle blemishes to the panels and making a couple of things align better with the UV sheet. Also adjusted the alpha channel to allow certain things show through (I’m looking at you, magazine texture).

Here’s my final model with the texture. Next it will be imported it into the workshop to highlight any remaining oddities I’m sure I’ll find. Then set up the workshop presentation files.

I'm thinking once I finish this and present it on the steam workshop I'll make an alternate version which can be applied as a pattern. I can see it working well.

I like the details, then energy bar and the mag etc, but I can't stop seeing this as an updated version of the storm skin cause of the over all use of the similar looking light blue color.

I've just finished the pattern version of this. I think it still works reasonably well.
It's on the steam workshop here.
