[Maya] Soft select - continuous selection

Hello, is there a way for soft selection to grow continuously along the mesh, and not travel through gaps?

So when I select a character's fingers, for example, the soft selection travels to his wrist to elbow to shoulder to chest and THEN to his hips, and NOT immediately to his hips.

Basically, equivalent of Max's edge distance. Or at least a workaround. Thank you :)
