Warhammer Comes to the Dota 2 Workshop

Hey PC, long time no post. a couple of us thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for this contest so people could post some of their WIP's. It'll help people get a feel for what's already getting made and hopefully help out the community avoid any conflicts in the long run. 

In no way does it mean anything anyone posts in this thread is "called", everyone is free to do what they want.

Ill start it out, I'm already working on a Beastmaster polynesian/mayan set so I was in "Beastmaster" mode when i was looking through the Warhammer stuff, for that reason i'm probably going to go with a "Vulkit Berzerker" Beastmaster. I know he's not a dwarf but I think some of their armor and crazy red hair could be a fun change for him. Besides Beastmaster I think this could also work for Centaur Warrunner. I'll start sketching and see which one feels better.

I want to really try to find some way to get those glowing gold runes embedded in their skin to work, shouldn't be too hard.

Slapped together a bunch of reference images into a "concept" and did a quick blockout. I plan on iterating a lot while sculpting, well see how that goes though,

Best theme ever, can't wait to get started! Does anyone know if the set has to be based on a playable race? I for example wanted to do high elf, but it doesn't appear to be one of the playable races.

This is really confusing. Since I don't play Warhammer series, I had google with "Warhammer fantasy battle" and the result is not so much. Is Warhammer 40k different to Warhammer fantasy battle and Warhammer Age of Sigmar???

40k is completely different, and off limits. Age of Sigmar is the 9th edition Warhammer tabletop that comes after Warhammer Fantasy Battle, and Warhammer FB was discontinued after the 8th edition . There will be some units that are the same between 8th edition and the 9th edition. I would suggest that you try to find some of the army books from edition 7 and or 8 for the faction you are going to use for inspiration. You can find a list of the armies on wiki, and stumble around and should be able to find a copy of an army book online somewhere. For example this Beastmen book, where the art has been pretty consistent between the later editions:

Thanks for the heads up! It doesn't help that all the IPs merge into one another. Age of Sigmar has most of the Warhammer Fantasy characters and 40k has always had a overlap with daemons. If I understand correctly we are not allowed to use any of the minis and artwork released for the 9th edition, revamped or new.

The bloodletter models i'm using as inspiration have both been sold for WH40 and WHFB. Actually if I remember correctly most deamon blister packs used to come with both square and circular bases.

If you're looking at minis you can assume that most of the ones on a square base are Warhammer Fantasy Battle. Which brings me to another point. A lot of the things floating around the web especially on CMON are conversions. They do not represent the original miniatures by GW and I don't think we can use those to draw on inspiration since it's someone else's artwork.

Tricky! I wanted to use parts Khorne Exalted Deathbringer model and Skarbrand's axes. Both awesome and unfortunately both 9th edition. Oh well, back to the drawing board!

Ok! So the exclusion the Age of Stigmar IP really took the wind out of my sails for the Khorne Axe idea I had. I fiddled around a bit with the bloodletter concept, but ultimately I couldn't get it to fit and feel right on Axe.

I moved on to a Be'lakor version of  Nightstalker (One of my favourite mini's back in the day). This one feels right! Here's a really rough "concept" of where i'm taking this. Feedback always welcome, especially at this early stage.

Does anyone know the details for having skulls related to the Chinese market? I know you don't want actual skulls because of this, but does it count if they are sculpted into the armor or metal? Warhammer has a lot of skulls and skull designs.

There's this article from back in 2014. explaining how it's all done voluntarily "just-in-case", and that the Chinese "skulls censorship thing" is actually a myth. Still, 'tis old information so take it with a grain of salt.
