Hey, nice start. I'm having a bit of a hard time telling what the individual materials are supposed to be. If you are using reference plz post it and I'm happy to tell you what I think. Right now I'm not blown away with material definition, but then again it's a suitcase thingy..
The model itself is fine. I would have maybe added a few more edge loops to get a slighty smoother, curved shape.
The texture, i actually preferred the texture in the reference image. I googled a quick wood suitecase:
I think to get it feeling more like wood, the texture required information that wood has (wood grains etc.) You can keep the varnished look if you'd like. You've said you're trying to project the rivets onto the texture, so i don't really need to comment on that. I assume you're trying to do a high to low poly projection? Or just photo sourced some rivets to add to the case?
For some personality and interest to the case, you could add some stickers, or something like a professional company badge. Just anything to get some interest into the prop.
I'm going to redo the high poly projection on the main piece ( it's divided in 3 pieces).
I changed the material because the soft leather of my reference required a little sculpting that I can't do at the moment ( Tendinitis ) so I opted for more rigid material.
I really like the wheatered reference you posted @DweenieTodd I think that is the look I'm after.
I'll update in some days with an hopeful better model ( and maybe sketchbook).

Instead of all leather I changed the inside to a rigid material ( painted wood ) and the outside to hard leather.
And I still have to insert the rivets ( I'm trying to project them on the texture).
Thanks for the critique.
