Maya Average Normals

Alright. I need a little help I've average the normal's on a model and for some reason it's refusing to accept input in relation to smoothing and hardening edges.

I have had this problem before, but for some reason it corrects itself if you replace a face but this doesn't always work.

Documentation doesn't really mention anything about this and i'm just wondering if someone can clue me into what's happening here and if there's a workflow to correct this?

If there isn't i can always export it out.

    Select your object, and then hit unlock normals in the Mesh Display drop down (believe the drop down was just Normals in 2014 and earlier? Cant remember off the top of my head).  Sometimes Maya will lock normals and that is why deleting the face and recreating it works, it is unlocking normals on a new face automatically until Maya then randomly locks them again.  I believe there are certain modifiers and tool combo's that force Maya to lock normals for certain operations, so it tends to be just an annoying side effect.
