Advice for an amateur character modeler?

My team and I have been excepted to show our new game at an upcoming convention based on a prototype we made.
We now have to make something that will look pretty and hopefully win some awards!
I'm going to be posting the progress here and would love any advice and criticism.

Here are my references.



My concept and current progress. Only modeled so far and will be doing texturing today.

    I'm having trouble baking as it has been a while since I've done this.
    Can anyone point out my issue or point in to something I can check out to try and fix this?

    It looks like your cage isn't extruded enough in certain spots. The cage needs to be extruded just off the model itself but not too far as that can also introduce baking errors. The cage just needs to have clearance all the way around, those black spots are where the mesh underneath the cage is pointing through.
