Hey all-- I've been working on this piece over the last month or so.. Here's a line up of WIP images. I will be creating step-by-step breakdowns of the work I did in order to illustrate how I went from concept to modeling to sculpt. It's been a pretty educational process for me so far, and I want to share that experience with the rest of the PC folks. Thanks for looking! C&C welcome and appreciated! Stay tuned for updates as I will be taking this to game-res and textured in a colorful PBR style close to Overwatch. Might be a little redundant and spammy, but these are saved images I took after an evening of work.
Model Sheets! And here is a link to my Artstation for a Marmoset Viewer!
Haven't posted in a long while. Been keeping at it and still making some adjustments-- I do have an asymmetrical shoulder.. I just have to get around to matching the textures. I'm currently working on his Hand-cannon. Thanks for watching and stay tuned!
Update 4_23_16 with fresh bakes.
Update: UV's! 4_21_16
Got the retopo finished this weekend! 4_18_16
This is the current and final sculpt. I'm very happy with this over all and very much ready to get to retopology.
This is really great. This actually made me realize that they updated his design for that upcoming game (which I'm guessing this is based off of), switching the detailing around the chest orbs (and the rest of him) from some beige boney-type detailing to gold.
@smurfbizkit -- yeah man, I've been using the concept from the Nightwar game as my ref. The gold trim in those areas definitely reads better than whatever the other material originally was in the comic. The angular bevels will bake nicely too.
@lolman -- I use 3D Coat for retoplogy. And here we have it-- screenshot from Max

@hunterscor -- I used 3D Coat for my reotpology-- yeah I'm not a big fan of Zbrush's retopo feature either.. it does it's job, but just don't have the control.
Texturing looks super cool! Nitpicks: The AO around the chest and maybe the shoulder ornaments comes off a little strong. Also the gold in general could maybe use some more saturation, but that depends on the feel you'd like. Keep at it man, this is turning out great.
sculpt looks ace, really love it! what I would consider, is looking at the concept and overall on the screenshots most of the time in the shadows the colors are less saturated, and as it gets to the highlight, and brighter part of the shape, it gets more saturated! also I see some hue shifts, for example on the shoulder armor in the shadows its purpleish, and on the bright part it gets a bit teal colored.. I think these changes would make your texture even more interesting color wise! it's a great piece, looking forward to the final outcome!
@Cordero -- thanks dude! yeah I'm currently trying to achieve that effect-- I'm tweaking the textures still, and it's coming along.. I'll post soon!
@hunterscor -- Hey man. I base mesh everything in 3DS Max-- well actually that's partially true-- for this project, I quickly dynameshed my shapes in Zbrush, and then for some of them, I can retopo the base mesh in 3D Coat, and take it to the hard-surface shape I want in 3DS Max. I mostly model my shapes from scratch using Max, though.
Just WOW ! It's really nice job dude ! I like EVERYTHING ! The best part for me it's the texture ! Can you post your texture as well please ? And I don't know if it's possible to write a small "workflow/tuto" about your texturing. Thanks a lot in advance and one time again... good job !
@Firith-- Thanks man! Yeah, they might look a little dark in the model sheet, but they read really nice in the model viewer-- trying to get a sketchfab up here, but they don't seem to be working in the forums right now. I've swapped out the right shoulder for the unique one. And I'm working on the hand-cannon in my spare time, so stay tuned!
Looks really fantastic dude, great result. I agree about the tough read on the clenched fists, maybe pop the spec a little so the plane changes catch the light? I'm excited to see the cannon finished

thanks in advanced

Thanks Firith!-- Good suggestions. I'll tone that stuff down. Here's an update-- finally have the cannon rolling. Updates coming soon

Only crit for the pose, the clenched knuckles don't read too well.
Swagolishous = I like it very much you put the right amount of details work and i love the colors, so good to see more from you, props.
