I'm pretty new to Substance designer - this is my first material without tutorial help and I'm struggling a bit.
As you can see I've sort of gotten roughly what I'm after for the basic forms of my slate shingles, but the method I wound up using was pretty janky and there's likely to be more problems when I come to detail further. I'm using directional warp to shift the unshaded about tiles but couldn't find a viable way of adding a proper gradient to each tile as the warp tends to mangle it. I wound up blurring a black and white version of the tiles to get the shading which doesn't give the greatest of gradations.
I"d be interested to hear how people who know what the hell they're doing would approach this.

What I would want to do if i were you is to have a few different tile plates though. Put to do that in an efficient way you should build a roof tile generator and a FX map. It's a few steps more advanced, but @bugo did a great tutorial on exactly this a couple of weeks back.
