Edit:
Most recent image.
Hey everyone,
Thought I'd start one of these sketchbooks to keep track of my progress over my current project, so here's my first post!
I've decided to do a 'next gen' version of a project I've done previously at University.
So its a vehicle/environment project based on an Indian Truck on the Zoji La pass in India.
First Step, reference gathering:
High poly for the truck:
Will post more updates tomorrow

Nice track you got here. I love all the small details on the driver's cabin.
I wonder what the early version, that you've previously done, looked like
Small note: one of ropes (the one closest to the viewer) is clipping through the cloth a bit.
Thanks man
I'm reluctant to show the old version at the moment, but will be sure to post a comparison at the end of the project.
So I decided to learn Substance Painter for this project. very much work in progress shot of where the textures for the truck stand so far.
So the environment went through a few revisions until I settled on a process I was happy with. For various work projects, I've been exposed to the use of photogrammetry so it seemed like a great excuse to go and capture some rocks for myself.
here are a few rocks, post tidy up in Zbrush
i decided not to use the texture from the rocks, but to make a graph in Substance Designer, which I could then run each individual rock through to create the feel for the rock I wanted plus keeping them all consistent.
Here is where the environment stands so far
Decided to work more on the environment, doing some more rock placement but mainly getting some textures blocked in.
I also adjusted the direction of the sun a tiny amount to get some more interesting shadows.
That's all for today!
Haven't had much of an opportunity to work recently as Dark Souls 3 has been consuming my life, but here is an update on the truck/environment.
Developed the under carriage of the truck some more, adding an axle between the wheels. I also added a bumper & some lose rope to the front, breaking up the symmetry somewhat.
I also played around with some post process in the scene, adding some depth of field and tweaking the scene colour.
So recently I've been working on some foliage for the environment, I made this 'desert scrub' model to add some more interest to the scene / help break up the harsh line between the rocks and the terrain. I will end up making some small stones an boulders to help this, but is just foliage for now
So recently I've been learning world machine to get some mountainous terrain into the background. I started off in Zbrush, sculpting the shape and size of the terrain I wanted, baked to a heightmap then imported into world machine to get some nice erosion effects.
This is the rock texture which is being used on the vista. It was generated by tiling photogrammetry pieces together and baking to a plane. I found this to be a good way to get some large interesting shapes suggesting a rocky mountain face.
Interior
I also decided to push this project further by modelling the interior of the truck. Its got a way to go still but this is where it stands so far.
