if anyone here uses vray, do you know why the plane light makes a shadow when it is turned vertical and near say a ceiling in a room? any insights would be appreciated
By default the vray plane light is spread equally in all directions. You can narrow the beam by increasing the directional option above 0 (turn on preview to see the effect in the viewport)
That's why it's casting a shadow onto the ceiling: because of the equal directionality. Is the light perpendicular to the ceiling or pointing straight down?
In vray you can disable shadows/diffuse lighting/specular/reflection on any light. Also, you could exclude the ceiling from receiving shadows from that light.
