A while back I saw a post someone had made of a dwarf character they'd made using only boxes. It looked really cool, and the boxes didn't deform at all. I need to make some mechanical characters for a class, and I figured that I could use that concept to make them quickly. However, I can't google it without getting box modeling tutorials.
Anyone know what a character like that would be called? Or how to model something from separate parts with no deformation (google mentioned rigid bind, that's first on my list to try).
I'm posting in the animation section because I need to animate them without any deformation.
TL;DR I want to make a character from separate boxes, how?

I'd recommend constraining, as it would likely make the rig faster, and since you constrained the group, you can swap out the box mesh later on or modify as needed.
Also, when researching how to do it in a non-CAT way, try looking for Proxy Rig setups. Proxy rigs tend to be non-deforming geo, like this. https://mrigs.squarespace.com/ has some fantastic rigs to show you a bit of variety
The dwarf rig I made that you liked is indeed created in 3DS Max using the CAT system plus a few extra little meshes thrown in.
Its a great way to quickly throw an idea together and start working without having to worry about a model.
