I am not very experienced or knowledgeable when it comes lighting in 3dsMax. Recently however I am becoming more interested in creating 2D textures by baking geometry inside of Max rather than using photo sources. When trying to bake a blend map of 3D geometry onto a 2D plane I came across the following issue:
I used one "target direct" light to create some shadows that would be baked into the texture. On the first bake (image on the left) things worked exactly as expected, but then I wanted to make a version with the shadows on and angle (version on right). I simply copied the light and moved it off to the right and then rotated it around 45 degrees. However in this bake the shadows no longer project. I checked both lights settings and they
are definitely identical, and I made sure that only the one I wanted to bake with was switched on at a time.
Does anyone know what is happening here? It appears that simply putting the light on an angle is stopping the shadows from rendering, but that cannot be right surely?! Is there some option somewhere that could cause this? Either something with the lights OR maybe the materials.
Thanks!
