Hi, I wanted to ask if this is possible where u can select some faces using a black and white map like the Vol. Select modifier in 3dsmax. Is there anything like this in Blender?
If you use a black and white mask, you probably have to cranck up the contrast in the texture panel to have a proper selecion. when you are fine, just apply the modifier to have you selection has vertex group

Before you start you have to create an empty vertex group.

you can combine it with a mask modifier to have an interactive, non destructive workflow
