Best tool to record screen and make timelapse videos

Hi, what's the best tool to record screen and make timelapse videos. I have used camtasia trial once, but the problem is when exporting videos it uses only one of my cores. And it's costly, about 300$. Is there any low cost or free option. What do you use to capture screen and make timelapse videos.

I used CamStudio once before, and it worked fine for my use, and its free. I don't know how it is today, since it was a couple of years ago.

If you have a NVIDIA GPU that is a certain series (600 and above I believe) you can use NVIDIA Shadowplay software which I have used and has been really good in terms of quality and speed for me. It is free if you have a GPU that qualifies.

I am using AMD 7970 unfortunately....

I am not sure if this is compatible or not compatible with any hardware but I have not heard of any AMD issues but don't quote me on that.

I have actually been interested in using Open Broadcaster Software for recording, without streaming.  Fraps and most other good screencap software is paid, but OBS is an open source streaming package, commonly used for Twitch.  I was streaming the other night, and noticed I could record my stream to a local drive without actually streaming to a service.  The recording is full source quality (Do not think there is any resolution limits), can capture full desktop and mic audio, and can do multiple monitors, individual application captures, or just a full individual desktop (if you wish to just stream from your main monitor).  

Bunch of guides on how to set it up for twitch streaming, just follow those guides, then just hit the "start recording" button and should be just a local recording of your desired setup

I've been using open broadcaster for all my screen recording. 

It's nice cause you can even put a logo or other stuff over the recording beforehand and then the speed it up in movemaker or something. 

Also the recording doesn't have to be full source quality, it can be whatever you want.

Another for OBS. I've been using it for all my screen recording needs of late. And you can associate it with a specific EXE or just do a monitor grab.

I use Bandicam. It's very lightweight and has a lot of options. It works flawlessly for me.

+1 for OBS.

I recorded all the audio and video for this using OBS, and it worked out great. It has a very small memory/processor footprint, and it can directly output common formats like MP4 or MOV.

How did you get it to look and sound so good? OBS always records with extremely low quality for me.

Can shadowplay record just a region of the screen or does it only capture fullscreen?

You definitely need to look at things like bitrate in the settings if you want quality recordings.

I believe it is just full screen.

OBS is cool but how do you export as anything other than flv? I may need to use .mov or .mp4 in order to help colleagues who are on a mac

You could use a converter like Handbrake to easily crop recorded videos if you need to. Also you can use GVR recording with an AMD card either through their proprietary app (AMD Gaming Evolved; basically their shadowplay equivalent bundled with social networking stuff) or OBS.

It's quite a lot more than just 3D modelling. Some time ago I had to do a bit of video editing and could find a free programm, I wasn't aware that I could actually just do it in Blender. Nothing fancy though, cuttings snippets together, adjusting playback time, adding sound and some transitions.

Hi all. I tried OBS and found it extremely fast with very low CPU and memory usage, however in order to get it fast and efficient you have to make some changes in the settings. After several googling, trial and error this settings are working best for me. Please check the screenshots below, this may save you couple of hours. And thank you very much for the recommendations.

On a related topic, to record the screen as an animated GIF I've read that Cropper and the "AnimatedGIF" plug-in make it simple. Not sure how it interacts with 3D software though:

Started Using OBS, it is awesome. What software do you use for editing and exporting to Youtube, i am going to use AfterEffects.
