(Apologies if this has been covered before, but searching didn't seem to find a pertinent topic.)
I understand that Digital Tutors seems to be the standard for how-to videos, but I'd like to get a good reference and instructional book as well. Should I just go with the official book by
Derakhshani or is something like Murphy's reference guide the better choice?

Quite seriously. It's the most up-to-date reference, and has plenty of instructional content.
You will need it once in a while as new releases come out; best get used to it.
enjoy reading good written and structured documents and tutorials, and find them
more in depth and easier to follow than videos. Also, because i enjoy reading
learning stuff when im not in front of my computer.
Luckily, there are tablets and e-readers for books, PDFs and online
documentations, maybe thats what you should look for.
Sorry, that i cant help you with a good recommendation for 3DSMax
