Crate progress / Suggestions

So I'm creating one of the generic Sci-fi crates. And I'd like for you to follow my process with any critiques and suggestions. 
At the moment I've got most of the base mesh down (starting with low poly). 
I'm going from a concept I found. And like most concepts, we have to imagine how some areas of the image work in a 3D world. 
Like this area, I'm struggling what I should make. I know its a handle of some sort.
Are there any references I can go off? Maybe a leaver of some sort that opens the crate??
