Maya - Make item looks soften (Question)

I have watched this tutorial on youtube and I would like to know how does he make the object look smooth (I assume he's pressing "3") without increasing the number of polygons. Any idea?

Without seeing the video it is probably just as you suspect toggling the "smooth preview". If you don't mean to just make hard edges smooth?
