Do Game Companies / 3D studios take in unpaid interns/volunteers looking to get experience?

Is this a thing that they do? I'm in my second year of university (fine arts), and want to go into 3d Art, preferably as a character artist. I wouldn't really care about what the internship/volunteer works involves, I'm willing to be the coffee boy if it means I get to put 3d Art related experience on my CV. Can anyone currently in the field shed some light on this? Would I need to get a portfolio together? I live in Canada (Toronto, and there's a bunch of studios nearby: ubisoft, game loft etc) if that matters. Thanks!

EDIT: apologies if this is the wrong section to be posting this. If it is, feel free to report this to be removed and I'll try to find a more appropriate place to ask.

Look up individual studios. I know that Ubisoft and Blizzard both have internship/student programs. I'm sure there are more; it's often listed on their site. Respectfully email some smaller studios, too, maybe. But short answer: Yes & you'd need a promising portfolio. ;)
