Hi, I've been modeling for about 2 years now and am familiar with producing game assets and render models. But I'm very weak at texturing. I've mostly created procedural textures using Substance Designer but it doesn't work quite well for low-poly nonuniform meshes. I've seen other people make beautiful hand-painted textures and I wish to do the same. I use Photoshop for basic editing but I'm not strong with painting in it. Can someone guide me how I should go about this? Thank you.

My humble suggestions:
1) Don't focus on "texturing". Focus on finding specific references for the style you're after and find a worflow to get similar but unique results. I compare texturing with painting and it can be a very instictive process. Nonetheless I tend to use Zbrush for organic materials and Quixel for procedural stuff.
2) If hand painted is the style you're after you may wanna take a look at this http://3dmotive.com/series/hand-painted-enviro-texturing.html and this http://3dmotive.com/series/stylized-character-texturing.html
If handpainting photorealistic textures is what u are after, I would advise, taking a photo of a simple object,or item from the net and replicating it in 3d using a 3d software, after modeling and unwrapping, try seeing if u can replicate the textures by handpainting it, don't use any photo textures. With practice, u will become better at creating your own textures.
