I am having a discussion with another contractors work.
I have been tasked to streamline and standardize the process by which contractors work. I usually don't want to critic another persons work but my boss has asked me to do this. This is so that any artist whatever app can edit the files in the future regardless.

So these are some of the problems.

I advised that if there are flat areas with less details that the mesh be cleaner.  Right pic is contractors work

I asked to properly name uvmap, textures, etc.
One model has names material1 right up to material38

Improve the uvmapping. The models have been uvmapped this way so the textures ofcourse look this way on the right which makes no sense.
It would be hard to edit imo in photoshop, etc.

Your professional opinion is highly appreciated.

Working with outsourcers can be quite difficult at first, especially when you are having to give feedback that isn't always positive. The only advice I can give is for you to remain polite and keep it how you would want to receive feedback. But ultimately remember that you have hired this person, and are presumably paying them, to create something for you and you are well within your right to ask for certain things to be changed/improved.

The best way to stop any issues that have come up is to clearly define everything before they begin working. Cover the file type and poly count that you are expecting to be delivered and that you require UV's to be easily laid out for editing in the future if you need (I ask for a .PSD as well so you can see how they have created the textures).
regarding textures, it may be worth providing them with a naming convention, it doesn't have to be the one you use in house, but something that you can use with external artists. Something simple.
If you aren't sure if they are up to the job, tell them what you are looking to have created and ask if they have anything similar that you can see. Sort of a way of verifying they can do it.

The wiki section can help as well - http://wiki.polycount.com/wiki/Freelance#Questions_for_the_Client
When you contact the contractor with what you are wanting done, try and pre-empt the questions by outlining everything.

    You're on the right track.

I do this a lot, directing the work of outsource artists. I primarily use good/bad images, with the bad (their work) on the left, and the good (my example) on the right. I draw a big red X over the bad workflow, and a green checkmark next to the good.

I deal with outsourcers whose primary language is not mine, so I also try to use images as much as possible, and as few words as possible.

I know that I can't send them to web links for utilities or tutorials or reference, as their country often blocks western sites. So I attach anything they need (unless it's a copyright issue, like a tool they need to purchase).

    Thanks for the feedbacks.
What do people think about the screengrabs? Are the points valid?
Btw I'm not the client. I was instructed by the boss to do this and tell the other contractors so the salary is not coming from me.
