I know theyre done with The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit movies and wont get back to them. Do you think there is material left for a new Tolkien universe movie? Maybe something outside The Shire?
There is material for it, like the Silmarillion which I'd personally like to see as a well made tv series. But it's quite well known that the Tolkien family is protective of the rights so I doubt that will happen anytime soon.
Yes, I hear much talk about Silmarillion. Im not that fond of TV series, Im more a film guy. Maybe there will be some words on Tolkien stuff in 2017 or 2018.
There's no way on earth that they could make The Silmarillion a movie in any sort of mainstream acceptable format without absolutely butchering the source material.
Anything that you dislike about the transition from book to film about LOTR or the Hobbit movies would be exponentially worse with The Silmarillion.
There is so much money to be made I will be surprised if they don't make more films for the franchise, although I agree that they would probably alter the heck of out The Silmarillion to try and make something appealing to mainstream people.
I'd rather see other franchises have a go. Elric, or maybe Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.
you could take out quite a few pieces of The Silmarillion and make stand alone movies out of them. It's been a while since I read it, but there's one classical love story in there that's a good candidate for a film (I think it's referenced in the LOTR movies as well.)
I don't necessarily think Peter Jackson should be involved with it though
“It’s
a legal thing. The Tolkien estate owns the writings of Professor
Tolkien – The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings were sold by Professor
Tolkien [in] the late 60s … the film rights,” he told media including
THR. [/Quote]
If there is a new one, i hope Mr. Jackson took some experience from the horrible production (i guess you all saw the video) of the hobbit and goes a bit more back to the roots.
They were upset about gambling games being made by people who hadn't purchased the rights. So I don't think they are upset about how the movies came out?
I agree that the Silmarillon might make a very good TV series. Furthermore it should be possible to take a bit of it (most likely The children of Hurin) to make a movie out of it.
But I feel that in addition to the licensing issue, the way the story is made is way too different from what people usually expect from a Tolkien movie. I mean the narration is so unlike the Lord Of The Rings that the average "I love LotR guy" will not get what he expected.

Just leave it alone

Considering the Tolkien Estate ain't too happy about New Line Cinema's treatment of the hobbit license (http://www.theguardian.com/books/2012/nov/20/tolkien-estate-sues-hobbit-producers ) this might be quite an uphill battle to get ahold of the other rights.

I would still love to see it though.
