Hey there,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but as a first timer I'll start here. Sorry if this is the wrong place.
I'm just getting started with 3D modeling (I've been playing around with 3DS Max and running tutorials through Digital Tutor) but before I go too far into it I wanted advice on the best tools to be learning for what I'm hoping to accomplish and where I should be focusing my attention to get to where I want to go.
So first my goal. I'm mostly looking at this as a hobby, and would like to learn how to make some pretty low poly models. I'm very interested in some of the low poly work I've seen recently and making characters like seen in Disney Infinity. I've posted some examples of stuff I'm interested in below:
Example 1Example 2Example 3 Example 4The tools I think I should be learning are as follows:
3Ds Max
Zbrush for characters
Photoshop for textures (Though I've heard a lot about substance painter as well?)
Anything I'm missing? Are there good tutorials for starting low poly modeling I should be looking at? Any suggestions would be really welcome
.

Also the Topology page (and subpages) are helpful

Finally, post your work in progress in 3D Showcase for critique. Implement the feedback and keep posting updates. It's a proven method for improvement, as long as you're diligent.
Good Luck.
