Weight paints or blend shapes? Best workflow for weight painting

I am trying to weight paint a hand and I cannot come to a satisfactory workflow for weight painting a finger that yields realistic deformations.

1. Do you guys use blend shapes for deformations of the skin folds when the finger is bent?
2. In general, what is the best state of the art workflow/pipeline for weight painting?

If anybody has a blend file with a well rigged hand it would be very nice to see.
