Making a low poly from a highpoly in hard surface subD. Whats the better route? (Weapon modeling)

Which would be the better route to making a low poly for hard surfacing? I work in Maya and I was thinking of using Modeling Toolkit to draw polys over the subD mesh. I've seen others just deleting edge loops that dont have an impact or minor impact on the silhouette. I keep having the urge to try out the modeling toolkit but Ive only done it for organic surfaces.
