Vertex normal workflow in 3ds max

Hi guys,

I am currently trying to get my head around creating custom vertex normals in max 2013. So far I love them but they only seem viable on large flat faces or simple assets because 'out of the box' max makes editing them so fiddly and time consuming they defeat their own purpose. 

I have read the popular thread explaining vertex normals on here but I think when the forum updated a lot of the links no longer work (at least for me) and I cannot find trace of the Syncview one mentioned. 

So can anyone here please point me to any scripts used for creating or automatically editing vertex normals in max? 

I would also really appreciate it if someone could explain to me common workflows when editing vertex normals? Do you use a script to automate the whole process or is there more to it? I enjoy tweaking them myself at the moment but pretty quickly it became apparent that that would take ridiculously long on anything even slightly complex.
