Problem with Ambient Occlusion in Max (white crevices)

So I've been having this problem for a while, whenever I render AO in 3D Max, the deepest grooves are lit. I have this issue regardless of if the grooves are part of the normal map or if they're on the actual model, and they show up with both regular renders (standard and mental ray) and Render to Texture. I'm using a skylight with Cast Shadows checked.
