[Alt Helmet] – Excalibur – Skutter

Hi everybody! This is the WIP thread for my contest entry.  Looking forward to comments and feedback

NOTE: Look to the last of the imagery as the helmet is taken NEW FORM!

Changed the name to Ecktor, but not sure how to alter topic header names here and on poly count.
The thought was this helmet could have preceded the original excal helm. Making it a bit more aggressive, less refined and primal. Ecktor is the name of the knight who'd raised Arthur before the sword and the stone element in the king Arthur story and as the helmet has completely changed its look, i feel it needed a new name too.

First off, I'd had some internet issues and hadn't gotten to post as i go, however i will share the "so far" wips images and the rest as i have 'em moving forward.  That said, here's the block out

Quick update, added in some sculptural details that better match the original excal head.  Adjusted the low poly mesh to better fit the body and then tested with a quick baked normal map.  Its kind of hard to see, but I have yet to do the sculpted forms that tie into the neck.  More pics soon, thanks for looking

Sculpting is great. But make sure You're following art guide. Warframe is a suit, and helmet...well, is a helmet. It would be dissappointing to get rejected because of that. So make sure at least You are understand that.
p.s.: yeah, I'm talking about those teeth...

Teeth arent supposed to be actual character teeth. They are merely ornamental. As an example, ballistic masks from army of 2. One of the masks has carved out teeth. I've made sure this helmet sits at the same size and holds the excal heads same volume. Is there something in the art guide specifically I'm missing?

If You've read guide inside TennoGen app, then I guess it's all the info available by now. Main part in "Some Reasons for Rejection" and "Creating an Alt Helm".

Read it before, read it again. The only issue i can see is overall the helmet might be too high frequency. Nothing about anitomical structures or anything of that nature. I guess im not seeing it lol.

I appreciate the advice, but I need specifics or suggestions. This is approximatly 2 days worth of work overall. Perhaps i should finish this and start another. I agree though, in some areas it might not look exactly the same as the other helmets being submitted, but thats just me lol. When and if i start the other helmet, ill be sure to post a link from here.

S-Ed has a point with his caution.  We tend not to not have exposed skin / similar in the characters (big jump into lore that we're not looking to do).  That said, your comment about it being ornamental skirts that quite alright (material treatment can really nail that down).  You are doing great work with the sculpts though so it might be safest to pursue the teeth-free helmet first and then come back to the original.

Absolutely. Thanks Kary! Im planning on getting more done on the new helm tonight. I do believe the redesign was the right choice to make and will be cranking on it first.

The transition looks great!  You're strongly selling the idea of a plastic / leatherish organic surface above the tech.  Very cool

Love the newer design! I think your earlier version just didn't fit into Excalibur's theme of swords, but if this contest was for Nekros, you would win in a heartbeat, Keep up the awesome work!

Thanks, head wasnt in the right place (my head lol). Thinking all i have left i want to touch on os the top of the head. Then final pass, retop, uv and texture. Oh and all the baked goodies of course. Really appreciate all the feedback!! So thanks again everybody!!!!

Since I some how double posted, I'll just post here lol.
  Thanksgiving day I suffered a catastrophic drive failure of my main drive. Back ups corrupted at some point...took me until this morning to get it all sorted, so I'm cutting it close here but considering i almost lost 5 years worth of work and this helmet to boot...yeah. Ok, pics coming NAOW!

I think you got too caught up with the details. For example the details under the chin are almost inconsequential, you could have spent more time refining forms.

Lost a great deal of time due to harddrive failure. My peesonal flow usually involves a second low poly pass to really pull out the forms. Especially when working without a concept. I had noted the under chin area as not going to be seen on the warframe forum, i was reading through the guide for the frames and really wanted the blend between the helmet and neck to be right. Maybe next time it'll all flow better. Still had fun doing it and would love to do more helmets and other items in the future.

Ok, now that the hd is running smoothly, ill be using my free time making more stuff for Warframe.
